DataDotDNA helps Australian Police to bust theft racket
In February this year, Police in Australia recovered 150 tyres and wheels believed to have been stolen from car boots. A 27-year-old Sydney man was charged with 35 different offences relating to the crime. Property Squad Commander Ken McKay said the man allegedly sold online 40 alloy wheels, eight laptop computers and other valuable items since last October. Police said they had discovered another hoard of 119 wheels and tyres and other charges were expected.

The arrest was the result of a joint operation conducted by the St George Local Area Command and the Property Crimes Squad of the State Crime Command police. However, it was the existence of , that provided undeniable evidence the goods were stolen.

“Through covert means we’ve been dealing with this person and purchasing property from him,” Property Squad Commander Ken McKay said. “Fortunately for us, a lot of the items have been brand new Subaru wheels which have technology which enables us to identify the rightful owners and again link those wheels and other property together to find the rightful owner.”

Unfortunately, not all the goods found were DataDotted. “A lot of the other property is not identifiable because they don’t have multiple identifiers within them. A lot of personal property that perhaps unfortunately might not ever get back to the owners, which is unfortunate.”
