One single DataDotDNA catches out Australian boat thief
The New South Wales Water Police have been using to catch and prosecute thieves since 2002. Broken Bay Acting Senior Sergeant Dave Buchanan shares with us one of his latest cases:

"A vessel with a suspected stolen outboard was located in Pittwater. The outboard motor, mounted on the transom

of the vessel, was noted to have had its serial and model number forcibly removed from the ‘leg’ area of the motor. The motor was also in brand new condition. The motor had been disguised with an older and lesser horsepower cowling. On face value, there was no immediate way of detecting the true identification of the outboard motor."

"Upon removing the cowling, it was however pleasing for Police to realise that the motor had been Datadotted, as is procedural for many newly manufactured outboard motors on the market. Within a short space of time the motor had been identified and returned to its owner intact, while Water Police made further enquiries into the perpetrators of this marine theft."

"It is my personal opinion, that this technology has positive implications for the detection of marine related crime, especially if the use of are made commonplace and standard in vessel and outboard motor manufacture."
