"DataDots can easily be identified by
Police, insurers, registration authorities and authorised dealerships.
Chris Rickards, General Manager, Subaru of New Zealand, said: “Subaru of
New Zealand has offered DataDot protection across its entire range in
New Zealand since 2003. The introduction of this advanced anti-theft
technology in addition to product design lead initiatives has seen a
significant reduction in theft rates amongst New Zealand new Subaru.
This demonstrates our intention to adopt the best ways of deterring
vehicle thieves.”

DataDots are a very good tool. The more
vehicles that are fitted with them the better it will be for everyone –
except the offenders.

Wellington's Organised Crime Unit vehicle
crime investigator Senior Constable Mark Gibson said would-be car thieves
were steering clear of the new technology as it was virtually impossible
to remove all the DataDots without destroying the car. "This has got to be
the best crime-fighting identification tool for the police that has been
released," he said.

"Police promote parts marking in all its forms and of
course this one (DataDots) is a spray, so there is very little of the
vehicle that the spray will not reach."
David Ryan, Head of Stolen Vehicles Squad
Metropolitan Police (London) |
"What we have seen here today is DNA for vehicles; 10,000 microdots are
sprayed all over a vehicle ..... and that will make information available
to the Police that was never available to them before."
Mr Paul Whelan,
NSW Australia Police Minister |

"DataDots can be applied to virtually any vehicle component. They make it
extremely difficult for thieves to change the identity of stolen vehicles
or use parts from another vehicle, or multiple vehicles, to "re-birth" a
vehicle. It represents a significant commitment to the very latest in
anti-theft technology and demonstrates our intention to adopt the best
ways of deterring thieves."

"There is very strong evidence that since September 2001 marked vehicles
(with DataDots) in both the BMW and HSV (GM) ranges have been stolen
unrecovered at significantly lesser rates (indicative of 60% for BMW and
73% /HSV) than unmarked vehicles (of the same make and models) were at
relatively the same age.
Police report that they are being told by offenders that post 2001 HSV's
(GM/Holden based performance vehicles) are now "too hot to handle" because
of their microdot "DNA" marking."
